Indie Short Film Festival Returns to Charlottesville March 19–21, 2027 with Three Days of Film, Filmmakers, Industry Panels and New $5,000 Greenlight Film Pitch Competition

Festival expands its filmmaker experience with a School of Visual Arts showcase, hands-on documentary filmmaking workshop, industry conversations and opportunities for emerging filmmakers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA — The Indie Short Film Festival (ISFF) returns to downtown Charlottesville March 19–21, 2027, bringing filmmakers, film lovers and industry professionals together for three days of independent cinema, filmmaker conversations, professional development, networking and special events including the popular launch party.

Now entering its fourth year, ISFF has grown into a destination for independent filmmakers and audiences, presenting films from Virginia, across the United States and around the world. The festival experience extends beyond the screen with filmmaker Q&As, panel discussions, workshops, table reads, networking opportunities, a Friday night Launch Party and the festival's Sunday Brunch Awards.

A continuing highlight of the 2027 festival is ISFF's partnership with the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City, which will feature a dedicated Animation & FX showcase presenting work from SVA filmmakers. The partnership connects one of the country's leading visual arts institutions with ISFF audiences and the growing independent film community in Charlottesville.

$5,000 Greenlight Film Pitch Competition

New for 2027, ISFF will introduce the Greenlight Film Pitch Competition, providing an independent filmmaker with a $5,000 production grant to help take a film project from pitch to production.

The competition reflects ISFF's expanding commitment to supporting filmmakers beyond exhibition by providing resources and opportunities that can help new work get made. The selected project will be developed and completed following the competition, with the finished film slated to premiere at the 2028 Indie Short Film Festival.

Hands-On Documentary Filmmaking Workshop

The 2027 festival will also feature a hands-on Documentary Filmmaking Workshop, giving participants an opportunity to move beyond theory and engage directly with the craft and process of nonfiction filmmaking.

The workshop is part of ISFF's broader emphasis on creating an environment where filmmakers can not only show their work, but also strengthen their skills, exchange ideas and develop relationships with other working creatives.

Six Conversations About the Issues Shaping Independent Film

ISFF's 2027 panel series will bring filmmakers and industry professionals together to address financing, screenwriting, representation, career development, animation and visual effects, and the rapidly evolving role of artificial intelligence in filmmaking.

The six scheduled discussions are:

Show Me the Money

Funding Your Independent Film: Grants, Investors, Crowdfunding & Creative Financing

The Film You Wrote vs. The Film You Will Make

Screenwriting Beyond the Page: What Happens to Your Story During Production

Her Lens, Her Voice

Women Filmmakers Creating Change

The Black Experience in American Cinema

Breaking Barriers, Creating Opportunities & Building Sustainable Careers

Pixels, Frames & FX

The Art, Technology & Future of Animation and Visual Effects

AI & Filmmaking: Friend, Foe, or the Future?

Creativity, Ethics & the Battle Over AI's Place in Filmmaking

The discussions are designed to be practical, candid conversations that give filmmakers and audiences access to different perspectives on both the creative and business realities of making films today.

More Than a Screening

The festival also includes a screenwriting competition with cash prizes and the opportunity for the winning screenplays to be selected for a Table Read event.

ISFF was created around the belief that a film festival should provide filmmakers with more than a place to screen their work. Visiting filmmakers have opportunities to meet audiences through post-screening Q&As, connect with other creatives and industry professionals, participate in panels and special events, and spend an entire weekend immersed in Charlottesville's arts and cultural community.

The festival's downtown setting also places visitors within walking distance of restaurants, shops, entertainment and many of Charlottesville's attractions, making the weekend both a film festival and a destination experience.

The 2026 Indie Short Film Festival presented 131 films from more than 15 countries and welcomed more than 100 filmmakers to Charlottesville. The 2027 festival will build upon that momentum with another diverse slate of narrative films, documentaries, animation, music videos and filmmaker-centered programming.
